A survey of over 20,000 community members by Experts Exchange (the leading network of tech professionals) came to fascinating findings. When asked whether or not they felt appreciated in their job, 72% of tech workers said yes. The best thing about a job in tech, they said, was the work-life balance. The downside? Sitting down straight for too many hours! This can be easily fixed, of course, through standing desks and office policies that encourage workers to get up at least once an hour to move their legs, run up and down a flight of steps, or perform stretching exercises.
More Women Entering STEM Fields
Women were one group that were underrepresented in STEM fields but all that is changing, thanks in no small part to powerful female leaders such as Ginny Rometty, Melinda Gates, or Sheryl Sandberg. In software and IT services, research shows a +27% increase in female leadership hires, with top skills by female leaders including business development, leadership, management, project management, and strategy. Unfortunately, the stats also indicate that women are being paid less than their male counterparts. Melinda Gates says, “Women did not create the barriers in tech and we cannot break them down all alone. Male allies are absolutely critical in this work and we’ll need more of them. But we can lead the way.”
Tech is clearly the way to go for forward thinking students who want a good ROI or who wish to pay off their student loans quickly. Challenges are still up ahead seeking to break into the industry, but things are looking on the up.
